Over the past several decades, Jack Mayer has worked in various media, including woodworking, painting, photography and jewelry. The irresistable versatility of concrete is his current medium of choice.
His hand-built concrete sculptures vary in size from 6 inches to more than 60 inches! Many are wild interpretations of animal and nature forms, architectural elements and gargoyles.
"I feel that I have a natural sense of balance, which, to me is the single most important aspect of art," says Jack, who gets some of his inspiration from Greek and Roman architecture. While his style tends towards the unusual, he has received commissions for large urns and "broken" Romanesque columns - ornamental accessories that make a statement in a garden setting.
Jack often incorporates cast acrylic into his designs, mostly for the eyes and toenails on his "gargoyle" sculptures. He also seals natural elements, such as autumn leaves, in multiple layers of acrylic, giving them a permanent floating effect in table tops.
His latest garden elements include man-height roses, but his most popular form to date is his oversized acorns, built of wire lathe armature with a stucco-like cement covering that he works like clay. They are made to be outside year round. His "Acorn Bird Products, Inc." include the Acorn Cafe and All Bird Cafe feeders, Nuthouse, Chickadee Inn, Bluebird Chateau and other delights for birds and bird lovers .
