Oil Painting for Beginners

Picture

"I recently took the Oil Painting for beginners Class Part 1 and Part 2 and just wanted to say how much I enjoyed it! Clair Maier is an amazingly talented artist and great instructor who guides you through each step from your first brush stroke to your final work of art. I now have the confidence to complete my own paintings. If you are thinking of taking this class I would highly recommend it!"

- Judy H.

Oil Painting For Beginners: Part 1

With Instructor Clair F. Maier
March 4 - April 8: 5:30 PM
Have you ever wanted to learn painting with oils, but never knew where to begin? This 6-week workshop is for you! We’ll cover oil painting essentials and get you started on your first painting! If you've previously taken a workshop in oils that failed to cover the basics, you might benefit from this beginner approach. Please note that this is not a "paint and sip" experience--this is an intensive 6-week course designed to prepare you for painting with oils on your own. The focus will be on learning a new skill rather than completing a painting during the 6-week session.

Instructor Clair F. Maier, with a BA in Studio Art from Saint Vincent College, will teach basic concepts of oil painting, including prepping a canvas, setting up a palette, choosing brushes, mixing colors, working with painting mediums, creating an underpainting, layering wet and dry paint, proper brush cleaning and maintenance, and more!

Class time will range from short instruction and brief exercises to sessions of working on individual projects. Clair asks students to bring 3 different photos 8x10” or larger (or a laptop/tablet) to use as references for your painting (no portraits, please). In class, she’ll help you select the best one to get you started successfully. Clair will also introduce basic principles of color temperature, value, proportions, and shading, and help you apply them to your particular project!

All materials are provided, and you’ll be given a set of supplies to keep! (You may wish to purchase additional materials after the first class, but no other materials will be necessary.) Some experience in drawing is helpful, but not required. Come ready to learn and open to a new experience! Ages 14 and up.

Just a Few Notes...

March 4 - April 8 | 5:30-7:30 PM

Oil Painting is a messy business, and oils don't come out of clothing! :) Please be sure to wear old clothes and/or an apron or smock. We also ask all students in our Art Center to wear closed shoes. While we have a water cooler on site, you're welcome to bring something to drink or eat during the 2 hr class--you'll be given several breaks.

All classes are held at Main Exhibit Gallery's fully accessible Art Center, located in the lower level rear of the building at 301 West Main St., Ligonier PA, 15658. Free parking is available in front of the building or on the side at Grant Street!

OIl Painting for Beginners: Part 2

With Instructor Clair F. Maier
This class, led by instructor Clair F. Maier (BA in Studio Art, Saint Vincent College), is designed for students who have already taken Clair's beginner class in oil painting. In this continuation, we'll continue right where we left off and cover several important tips and techniques for completing paintings, as well as begin a new painting to refresh on the basics. Students with learn how to sign, varnish, and frame their originals from the previous course (framing will consist of a lesson which students can apply at home). We'll also cover how to tighten a loose canvas and how to prep a surface using gesso, while continuing our discussion of color, value, proportions, and measuring to help you create another beautiful finished painting! Class time will range from short instruction and brief exercises to sessions of working on individual projects.
Students should bring:
  • 3 different photos 8x10” or larger (or a laptop/tablet) to use as references for their next painting (no portraits, please, or photos of other paintings or artwork).
  • ALL materials (paints, brushes, palette knives, etc.) provided in Oil Painting for Beginners: Part 1.
  • Their completed painting from Oil Painting for Beginners: Part 1
We'll provide classroom basics like paper towel, turpenoid, baby wipes, disposable palettes, brush conditioner, and linseed oil, as well as varnish and gesso. We'll also add several new materials to your personal collection!  Ages 14 and up.
