Mandy Sirofchuck

Stained Glass Artist

Since 1984, Mandy Sirofchuck has worked in stained glass, creating many commissioned works, both public and private, in copper foil and leaded panels. Her most recent foray is in the art of painted fired-on stained glass using vitreous paints. These paints are finely ground glass with intense metallic oxide pigments that, once fired into the glass, can be used to permanently shade or color the glass pieces. She also works with vitro fusaille - joining glass by fusing, then painting and kiln firing.

“I became intrigued with stained glass after writing a high school research paper on the great gothic cathedral windows. From then on, I was determined to work in glass. My background in graphic design - especially logo design, where you take a complex idea and simplify into into a symbol - helped me with designing for this two-dimensional medium. There are so many facets of this art that I love. First, the design factor, where I get to draw. Next, the cartoon step, where I paint my design full scale. The glass cutting and fabricating with lead or copper foil satisfies my “crafter” side, as I love to work with my hands. And, of course, the intensity of the glass colors with light pouring through them.”
