I always promised myself that retirement would be the time for me to start learning how to paint, so in 2017 I took a few art classes. My first classes were watercolor batik on rice paper, which opened the door of creativity for me. But after 2 classes, I discovered I was more of a “self-taught” artist, mainly because I like to experiment – with papers, mediums and techniques (and therefore, make lots of mistakes). Lately I have been experimenting with sandpaper and pastels. I especially like the effect of playing with high contrast whites and grays on black sandpaper. My other experiment has been applying pastels on top of watercolor paintings to get an added layer of color and depth. For some unknown reason, my paintings have a tendency to “wander” off the paper, mostly onto the mat board, but occasionally the frame as well. I think some paintings do not like to be contained inside a square box. In 2018 I took 12 of my favorite paintings, created them in pen and ink and turned them into a coloring book, Outside the Lines. |
